3 Herd That vs. 6 Team 23, 7p EDT, ESPN2
It’s an alumni team playing in front of its home fans against a TBT staple. Just like they did last summer, Jon Elmore and Jacorey Williams formed a formidable duo in the Round 1 win over Team DRC. Expect Herd That, a Marshall University alumni squad, to continue to play its fast-paced brand of basketball as the tournament continues. Team 23 has been a mostly regular entry into TBT over the years, and this year’s edition hopes to reach the Round of 16 behind ex-NBA players Walt Lemon, Jr. and Daniel Ochefu, as well as Marcus Hall, who guided the Colorado alumni squad to the 2016 title game.
2 Best Virginia vs. 7 D2, 9p EDT, ESPN2
While Best Virginia will once again have the Mountaineer faithful rooting courtside in the Charleston Coliseum, D2 will do its best to prevent the West Virginia alumni squad from reaching the Round of 16. Kevin Jones had 18 points and 13 rebounds in Best Virginia’s opening-round win over WoCo Showtime. Shaun Willett (18 points) and Todd Withers (16 points, 9 rebounds) paced the attack for D2 in its win over Bleed Virginia.
3 Armored Athlete vs. 12 Bucketneers, 2p EDT, ESPN3
This will be a matchup of a TBT mainstay against a tournament newcomer. Armored Athlete is known for deep tournament runs nearly every summer. Judging from the team’s opening-round rout of HBCUnited, it looks like this summer may not be any different. Standing in their way will be the Bucketneers, an East Tennessee State alumni squad which defeated War Ready with ease in its TBT debut.
1 Sideline Cancer vs. 9 Fort Wayne Champs, 4p EDT, ESPN3
Two teams with TBT experience will battle with a berth in the Round of 16 on the line. Sideline Cancer needed a tie-breaking three-pointer from Mo Creek to stave off an upset bid from 16th-seeded Founding Fathers in an opening-round win. Look for 2020 TBT honoree Marcus Keene, who arrived early in the morning of the first-round matchup, to play an even bigger role in Round 2. The Champs will rely on TBT veteran Steph Hicks to carry the scoring load.
