Darryl Morsell’s game-winning dunk capped a dramatic Elam Ending as the Kentucky Alumni held off a furious Louisville Alumni comeback for a 72-68 victory in Game 1 of their best-of-three first-round TBT series Saturday afternoon at Historic Memorial Coliseum.
The opening game of TBT 2026 aired nationally on FOX and renewed one of college basketball’s fiercest rivalries, with Kentucky defending its home court against Louisville.
The matchup marked the second meeting between the two programs in TBT history. La Familia also won the first meeting, defeating The Ville 70-61 in the 2024 quarterfinals at Freedom Hall.
The Ville came out firing, taking a 21-17 lead after the opening quarter behind nine first-quarter points from Chris Jones. Kentucky responded with a dominant second quarter, knocking down four three-pointers while Sean McNeil and Andrew Harrison combined to fuel a 24-point period that sent La Familia into halftime with a 41-33 advantage.
La Familia extended its lead to as many as 17 points midway through the third quarter before The Ville mounted its comeback. Montrezl Harrell sparked the rally, scoring seven points over the final five minutes of regulation to trim the deficit to four entering the Elam Ending.
With the Target Score set at 71, Kentucky entered the Elam Ending leading 62-59. After both teams traded baskets, La Familia held a 70-68 advantage, setting up a winner-take-the-next-basket finish. Following several empty possessions by both sides, Kentucky executed a perfectly designed baseline inbounds play that freed Darryl Morsell for an uncontested dunk to seal the victory.
Morsell led all scorers with 17 points while adding five rebounds and three assists. Andrew Harrison chipped in 14 points, Sean McNeil scored 12 off the bench, and Chris Coffey grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
For The Ville, Chris Jones finished with 16 points, while Montrezl Harrell and David Johnson each added 12 points. Jaylen Johnson provided a spark off the bench with seven rebounds in 14 minutes.
Kentucky’s advantage came from beyond the arc, where La Familia shot 7-for-17 (41.2%) compared to just 6-for-28 (21.4%) for The Ville. Kentucky also won the rebounding battle, 35-32, despite Louisville holding a 32-24 edge in points in the paint.
The two teams will face off again on Monday night at 7pm ET in Freedom Hall in Louisville on FS1 tickets for that matchup are still available, and can be purchased HERE.
