DAYTON, Ohio – Best Virginia’s offense had been one of TBT’s best this summer, averaging the third-highest points of any remaining team. In Friday night’s quarterfinal matchup, the Red Scare clamped down and sent Best Virginia home.
Scoochie Smith tallied a game-high 17 points, and the Red Scare won its fourth straight game in front of a raucous crowd at UD Arena to advance to its first-ever TBT semi-finals with a hard-fought, 67-60 victory over Best Virginia.
“A lot of stress,” reflected Red Scare coach Joey Gruden. “I enjoyed it for like a two-minute span when we went on a run, but then it was back to stress.”
In a battle of alumni teams, the University of Dayton alums topped their counterparts from West Virginia University. The tight contest featured seven ties and 13 lead changes.
Smith basked in the atmosphere of the crowd, Dayton’s largest yet in TBT.
“It was amazing, with the crowd out there,” said Smith. “The way the court is set up with everybody all together…it makes it even more enjoyable.”
Jordan Sibert (12 points), Darrell Davis (11 points) and Trevor Thompson (11 points each reached double-digits in scoring for the Red Scare, which pulled down 16 offensive rebounds, leading to 22 second-chance points.
Jamel Morris and Jaysean Paige led the way with nine points apiece in the losing effort for Best Virginia.
